Helping renew the world of coffee with every cup

We're helping farmers to employ regenerative agriculture practices.
Powering you and powering our factories

Creating a better future for coffee means finding more ways to use spent coffee beans. By converting them into biofuel, 19 of our 21 factories used biofuel in 2025. Learn more in our NESCAFÉ® Progress Report.

What is biofuel? Biofuel is a renewable energy source made from natural materials. In our case, it is made from coffee grounds or coffee by-products.

Every drop of water makes an impact

In Vietnam, we proved that coffee can be grown using less water. This doesn’t just help lower costs for farmers but also leaves more water to be used by local communities. Since 2011, we have introduced water saving techniques such as optimised irrigation procedures, drip-irrigation, and better access to short term weather forecasts to all NESCAFÉ® Plan farmers so that they reduce the amount of water for coffee irrigation.

CIRCULAR ECONOMIES

Making high-quality coffee requires time, energy and resources. That’s why we’re constantly looking for ways to build more circular economies where waste is reduced and wherever possible raw materials are reused - especially when it comes to using natural resources.

At local farms, we’re helping to improve irrigation techniques which can reduce water usage while maintaining productivity. At our Tri An factory in Bien Hoa (Dong Nai province) we are using coffee grounds as biofuel to partially power our boilers and lights.

We're also training farmers to introduce regenerative agriculture practices, including the planting of additional tree species at coffee farms. These methods not only can support soil health, but also potentially reduce the need for chemical fertilizers.

Reducing water usage and reducing waste production, while still making quality coffee. It’s a dream for coffee lovers – but it’s a reality for us and one we’re taking seriously.

FAQ

In line with the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform, NESCAFÉ® defines “regenerative agriculture” as an approach to farming which aims, through practice adoption, to conserve and restore natural resources, primarily soil, as well as water and biodiversity, while capturing carbon in soils and plant biomass, and to support farmers’ livelihoods. Key practices promoted under the NESCAFÉ® Plan include efficient water use and optimised use of inputs.
