There are many ways to make a cup of coffee, but the one that uses the least energy is ours – simple, soluble granules.

You can make just one cup if you’re on your own – so you don’t have to heat as much water in your kettle. And you don’t need to boil it, either. At the risk of stating the obvious, coffee is different from tea (which needs 100ºC boiling water). The best temperature for instant NESCAFÉ is 80ºC – if the water’s any hotter it scorches the coffee and spoils that lovely aroma. Plus a cooler cup means less waiting around before you get to enjoy it.

That small temperature difference can make for a massive energy saving. Boiling a whole kettle three times a day uses approximately 110kWh of electricity a year, but if you heat the water to just 80ºC each time, you could save 22kWh over the year, enough to power a 50” LED TV for 1,375 hours!

There are lots of great kettles on the market that let you control your desired temperature. But you don’t need to splash out – just heat the amount of water you need in a pan and wait for the bubbles to appear (that’s the sign it’s simmering at around 80ºC).
